Цитата Grigory Grigoryevich Chernetsov-? "Episode of Napoleonic retreat from Russia", oil, 1820s Displaying on its verso (written by German pre-owner partially in Cyrillic) inscription "Chernetsoff", this (oil on canvas) painting indeed bears a certain resemblance to early works of well-known Russian artist Grigory Grigoryevich Chernetsov, who was active in the 1st half of the 19th century (for comparison, see our images nr.8-12). This scene shows an episode from the dramatic retreat of Napoleon's army from Russia in autumn-winter of 1812. As it is known, throughout their whole journey, the retreating Napoleonic troops have faced countless raids from the Cossack detachments marching along the same (parallel) path. In our painting, we see a French officer, who lagged behind his unit and, together with his "trophy" (a young Russian woman), is attacked on the edge of the wood by an armed and dashing Cossack. Grigory Grigoryevich Chernetsov (1802 Lukh, Kostromskaya gubernia - 1865 St. Petersburg) was born in Lukh (currently - part of Ivanovskaya oblast, Russia). His father and older brother, Yevgraf, were icon painters. His younger brother, Nikanor Chernetsov a landscape painter and often worked together with him. In 1819, Grigory Chernetsov, encouraged by Pavel Svinyin, who was earlier travelled to Lukh, arrived in Saint Petersburg where he wanted to enroll in the Imperial Academy of Arts. He was not admitted. However, he got permission to work there two hours per day. He was not granted a fellowship and had to live with the support of his father, being constantly low on money. In 1822, he was granted the small Silver Medal for his drawings and accepted to the academy, where he studied under Alexander Varnek and Maxim Vorobiev. In 1823, Nikanor joined him at the Academy. The brothers graduated in 1827 with small Gold Medals. After graduation, Grigory Chernetsov was hired as a staff painter at the court. His duties included producing paintings of official events such as military parades or official receptions. From 1837 on, the Chernetsov brothers worked together. In 1838, they travelled down the Volga between Rybinsk and Astrakhan, making landscape sketches on their way, and later using these sketches to make paintings. In the 1840s, they travelled over Italy and the Middle East. -------------------- "Когда Государству что-то от нас нужно, оно называет себя Родиной"
